Laparoscopic Procedures

The advanced surgical team at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion, Illinois is now offering laparoscopic colon, kidney, liver and adrenal resections for eligible patients. Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery is a modern surgical technique performed through making small incisions instead of the larger incisions needed in traditional surigcal procedures. The advantages to the patient with laparoscopic surgery versus an open procedure include reduced pain due to smaller incisions, decreased need for narcotic pain medication, faster return of bowel function after gastrointestinal surgeries and shorter recovery time.

While colon and gallbladder surgeries for cancer are often done laparoscopically today, only a handful of medical centers offer laparoscopic liver resection due to the demanding nature of the surgery and in-depth training necessary in both liver and laparoscopic surgery.
